Taking Risks & Intentionality Is Key to Success in Life: More Landman Lessons
I play my life and decisions in my mind often. I guess it’s true, too much introspection can be a detriment. Some introspection is good though. I have definitely realized I have played it safe through many aspects of my financial life. I was too conservative.
Frankly, I was a gutless coward. Too scared of risk. Played it way too safe. Not taking the higher risk job offers in early Klipmart, Google, Facebook, which would have been massively lucrative. Not betting on myself sooner than I did. Anais Nin rightly said: “Life shrinks or expands according to one’s courage.”
Risk is everything. Risk builds empires. Cami who has taken over her husband's empire says:
“I understand it now. What drove him.
There’s a rush and exhilaration to that risk. Don’t you feel it? I think it’s what allowed him to live.”
I’ve finally learned this lesson over the last 5-6 years doing my own thing. I should have taken way more risks earlier. One of my biggest regrets is not being able to provide the full scale of lifestyle my family deserves. It’s your job to provide as a man.
I also should have been much more intentional with my life. I planned the small things but not the big things.
There is a specific conversation that also stood out from the show between the grandfather and his physical therapist Penny.
She asks: “What’s the plan for me?”
He responded “Life ain’t got a plan for you. You gotta have a plan. Then you wrestle with life to make it come true.”
That is the complete and simple truth. So take some risks, have a plan. But you gotta take action and execute. Go all out. And always believe in yourself and bet on yourself. Fight off the doubts and negative inner voice. You have to truly believe it will work out. I can attest, it usually does.
As the main character Tommy said: “I just gotta know. If I got one more home run in me.”
