Reflecting on Landman in Maui: Being Present

I was on the road a lot in 2026 so figured I would take a break right at the start of the summer. First Maui and then Vancouver the week after to visit family. But it coincided with some nuttiness in the business and just a brutal financial year. I had a bit of a challenge relaxing with my family the first few days as I was chasing down some deals and trying to sort out some operational issues in the business. Added that the scramble of sorting some personal cash flows issues stemming from my real estate mess. God, that investment better be worth it and I think it will be but a pain. Every frigging 4-5 years something happens that hurts my pocket book. So I admit I was somewhat distracted from the beauty around me. And starting to feel a bit down.

But then I happened to rewatch Landman’s season 2 and in the last scene of the last episode of the season, the wife said something that hit me. She said:

“Baby, I win every day. You do too. You just don’t see it. But it’s there. It’s all around you. Just got to take the time to notice. Like now.”

And just like that, I became way more present. Easier to do when you are in the paradise of Maui. The sun was shining, the weather was perfect and the breeze was mild. I was sitting on a beautiful beach watching my daughter laughing while she swam in the blue warm ocean. If this isn’t winning, not sure what is.

A mental respite and assurance. This is not my first personal financial crisis, and it ain’t gonna be my last one. It’s like Justin Waller’s mentor told him, “if you aren’t almost going bankrupt every 5 years, you ain’t doing Sh-t!”

I figured it out before and I know I always will. Reality is that you are winning when you are being present and enjoying your time with your loved ones. It’s as simple as that.
