How Dare You?

I am a sucker for Japanese movies. “How Dare You” is a movie about a 10 year old boy named Yuishi, who has a crush on classmate Kokoa. She is deeply interested in the environmental movement and in an effort to impress her, he starts learning more about it.

In an innocent love triangle with class troublemaker Haruto, they begin to write signs and do many silly pranks around their small Japanese town advocating environmental rights. Dumb kid stuff. “They were trying to do a good thing but did it badly….”

Yet grand adventures for kids around town. Things get a bit out of control albeit in as much as out of control as possible in Japan, which is not very much.

Reminded me of my childhood. We were so innocent and clueless. Learning about the world and wrestling with emotions we had little experience and understanding. I saw this in my daughter at that age. Pure feeling, completely pure. No guile while they were slowly learning about themselves and their place in the world.

This movie reminded me of that time minus the environmental extremism. It also showed all the stupid things a guy will do to try and impress a girl they like. I guess nothing changes here too much whether you are aged 10, 20 or even 50. Something reassuring about that.

What a fun and silly movie. It made me reminisce about my childhood. And it also reminded me that I need to enjoy the small little things in everyday life more.
