Even More Landman Wisdom: It’s All About People

That is easily one of the best shows on tv right now. Great drama but also a crash course on what is the most important industry in our modern world: the oil industry. One that we have long overlooked or ignored in our prosperity. The rough & tumble brutal life on the oil patch. 

But “when oils booming, every night is like friday night.” But big money always comes with big problems. It’s a game like in any industry and “you got to know the rules of the game to bend ‘em. And you really gotta know to break them.”

Tommy also runs into his new partner Danny Salazar played by the legendary actor Andy Garcia at the Cattleman’s club.

Danny: “Tommy, you are surrounded by fierce women. Maybe that’s why you are so fierce. They make you fierce.” 

Tommy: “I’m not fierce. I’m very protective.”

Danny: “Well, that’s what fierce means.”

Danny is not just a drug kingpin, he is trying to diversify his money into other asset classes like any wealthy person. He talks with the new owner of M-Tex Oil, Cami. 

Danny: “You know what I do? I’m an investor.” 

Cami: “In Oil?” 

Danny: “In People. In people I believe in, and you’re a person to believe in.”

This reminds me of the core of venture investing. Investing in people. Find the right people at the right time, that’s where the money is. 

At the end of the day, like all good shows it’s all about the people. About love, loss, hope, dreams and family. Having a code: “I don’t know about kind. I try to do what’s right, what’s decent. Don’t always do it, I try.”

A good show reflects real life. Maybe that is why I enjoy Landman so much. The importance of living. Truly living life. Treasuring the days and watching the sunsets. A good reminder to do this more often.
